This course is about learning the fundamentals of writing comedy. Sketch comedy is short and focused, so it makes for an excellent introduction to the craft.
No experience in comedy writing is required to join this course.

What You’ll be doing in this Writing Course
You’ll be learning and practising crucial sketch comedy writing techniques. Looking at how sketches are formed, what makes a good sketch and maybe even analysing some of the existing greats.
Taking the tiniest scrap of an idea to a completed sketch becomes easy once you understand how it all works. This course will arm you with the tools to:
- Generate and build on ideas
- Create rounded comedy characters
- Plot and structure sketches
- Write dialogue
So come prepared to learn, laugh, put pen to paper and get creative.
What You’ll get out of the Course
By the end you’ll have several completed sketches that you can call finished, which you can then try to get produced. And, of course, the skills to go away and write more comedy on your own. You’ll also get regular constructive feedback from your experienced teacher on the work you create over the duration of the course.
There’s also the opportunity to find potential collaborators in your classmates. Collaborating with others is a great way to keep that creative spark going beyond the sketch writing course.
Teacher: Jennifer Banks
A writer and performer for over 20 years, Jennifer has written for BBC Radio, MTV and VH1 amongst others. Her two-woman comedy show Strife In A Northern Town was shortlisted for the national Funny Women Best Show Award 2017. And in 2018 she performed in Trollope, which won the Best Comedy Play award at the 2018 Greater Manchester Fringe Festival, and Fringe Production of the Year at the Northern Soul Awards.

Frequently Asked Questions
Should I bring any writing equipment?
Absolutely. Your laptop, or your notepad and pen, or whatever other tools you prefer to work with.
Will we film any of the sketches we write?
We did consider that for this course but producing video content is a whole new learning curve. We decided not to cover that in this course so we could keep things reasonably priced and simple.
We're definitely considering it for future courses, though.
However, we'd encourage you to speak to your teacher about any live shows where you and your classmates can test your new material. There's no shortage here in Manchester.
I can't make every session. Should I still enrol?
You should sign up if you think you won't miss more than two sessions. Any more than that and you may find yourself falling behind.
Will I be required to write outside of the course, in my own time?
We can't -- and won't -- force you to do anything you don't want to do, even during class time.
If you're finding it difficult to find time outside of class to practise any given exercises, feel free to speak to the teacher about it. We always do what we can to accommodate people's individual circumstances.
Payment Terms
We can be flexible with payment and so if you’d rather not pay in full now, you can pay a deposit to lock in your place and pay the rest later. We can accommodate if you need further flexibility, just give us a shout.
