The Improv Jam/Class combines the playfulness of a Jam with the learning benefits of a drop-in class. It runs over the course of a day to allow everyone time to get involved, get direct feedback from the facilitator, and just play around like you would in a normal Jam.
Each session will aim to focus on one aspect of improv. This session focuses on Improv Games.
Unlike the Thursday Improv Jam, registration is required before attendance and available spaces are limited.
This session accommodates mixed abilities. You may have only done one or two improv classes before or you’ve taken a few courses and performed in some shows. Either is fine.
What’s Covered in the Class?
We’ll be looking at different types of Improv Games in this session, and how to get the most fun and funny out of them. You’ll learn about why a game’s gimmick produces humour and how to use that knowledge to make funnier performances. The class will cover two or three types of improv games:
- Guessing
- Continuation/Collaborative (e.g. word at a time)
- Endowment and justification
What you’ll be doing in this Jam/Class
The exact format will depend on the teacher and topic of the class. But all Jam Classes will involve learning about the specific topic through guided exercises, where the teacher will provide you with feedback and knowledge. There will also be time spent playing, effectively giving you the opportunity to put into practice the very things you’ve learned in the session.

Frequently Asked Questions
I'm a complete beginner. Can I join these classes?
It varies but we'll always make it clear in the event's description. Look for the blue boxes near the beginning of the descriptions, experience level is always dropped in there.
Generally, if there are two classes in a month, 1 will be open to those who are yet to try any improv or acting.
What are the improv classes like?
A lot of fun! It's improv comedy we're doing here.
We always start with some light (and sometimes a bit silly) theatre exercises as a group to loosen everyone up and shake off the day. Then the class will move on to exercises related to that session's topic (movement exercises in a character class, for example). The teacher will give feedback both generally to the class and directly to individuals throughout the session.
How are drop-in classes different from the weekly Jams?
The drop-in classes involve a lot more teaching than the Jams. You'll receive more direct guidance so you'll see your abilities improve much more quickly.
The drop-in classes are for you if you'd like to learn more about and become better at improv.
