This course is our introduction to Musical Improv! You’ll learn about the basics of coming up with lyrics, breaking into song from your scenes, and many of the mechanics around improvising musical numbers.
Some basic improv experience is necessary for this course. Either you’ve done a beginner’s improv course before (with anyone, not just us) or you’ve been casually doing improv for a little while (e.g. the Jam).
You do not need to be able to sing to take part in this course.
What is Musical Improv?
Musical improv can take many forms. From short-form games that revolve around a single song to entire improvised plays in a style of musical theatre.
It often involves improvising lyrics—whether you sing them or rap them—and coming together with your fellow performers to create entire songs from nothing.
What you’ll be doing in this Musical Improv Course
You will be introduced to a few of the core mechanics that bring improv and music together. We’ll explore the transition from speech to song, get comfortable with the different song styles and formats, and develop skills such as rhythm, rhyming, tuning, and storytelling.
The course is also a great opportunity to safely experiment, explore, and find your musical improv style. And of course, you’ll still get to enjoy playing with the classic improv you know and love.
What you’ll get out of the Course
You’ll come out of the course with a better understanding of musicals and how they work. You’ll also be expanding your improv repertoire, which will make you a better improviser and performer in general.
