The Intro to Improv Taster Class is a short, easy, two-hour session that covers a few of the basics of comedy improvisation.
No acting, comedy or performing experience is required for this class. Anyone 16+ can sign up.
What Happens in the Session
This is a structured and guided class that takes you through the fundamentals of theatrical improvisation. An experienced teacher will ease you into a few theatre exercises and games over the course of two hours to give you an idea of how the craft works and what you can get out of it. These exercises are done in groups so everyone is in it together; nobody is ever singled out and asked to perform in front of the class.
The Benefits of Improv
Partaking in improv has been found to have many benefits for personal development. In the short term, it’s just play, in the same way kids play but for adults. This can be great for relieving stress after long day of being a responsible adult and generally improving your mood. Long term, improv can teach you to be more mentally flexible, and to be more receptive to new ideas and opportunities.
For performers and artists, it can push you towards being more dynamic. Reacting to changes in your environment (think: impromptu requests from the director during an acting audition) becomes a little easier; plus, devising content through improvisation can be a powerful way to work as an artist.
Who Should Take this Class?

Beyond the Class
ImproQuo does its best to encourage community and enterprise in the improv scene: helping groups put on their own shows, hosting socials and running classes and courses on improv and comedy. The improv community goes far beyond Manchester too, and is incredibly welcoming by nature. Frequently Asked Questions
Do I have to be funny?
Nope. But you will be laughing in the class, for sure.
The exercises are light-hearted, fun, and done in groups so that nobody feels singled out or put on the spot.
Only 5?
We really want to encourage more diversity in our little corner of the arts: different races, religions, orientations, genders and all else. What better way to coax people out of the house than with reasonably priced fun?
We're pretty confident you'll enjoy it. Like any performing art, it's something that needs to be experienced to really see its value.
Can I bring a friend?
Stuff like this can be a little nerve-wracking if you've never done anything like it before. But you might find it a little easier to jump in if you've got a familiar face around.
Share this page with your friends and ask them to come with.
Do you encourage diversity?
100%. Improvisation is all about collaboration, and it gets better when there are plenty of different and unique points of view contributing to the group.
There's also a notable lack of diversity in our industry and we're doing what we can to change that.
What is improv comedy?
Improvisational comedy is, typically, comedy scenes, sketches and games played out by performers without a script. Often, the audience will provide a suggestion on something like where the scene should take place (a restaurant, for example) to inspire the performers, and the performers will then improvise the performance for that scene.
There are many different forms of improv comedy but the fundamental principles of collaboration and support remain consistent throughout.
