This improv course will focus on creating strong scenes through improvisation. A great scene can come in many forms. For example, it can paint a vivid picture, progress a narrative in a meaningful way, or simply make your audience laugh. (Or all of the above!) You’ll gain a solid understanding of how this is possible through this course.
You must have completed at least one of the Level 2 improv courses to be eligible for this course.
If you haven’t done any improv or acting before, consider the Level 1 Improv Comedy Course.
What you’ll be doing in this Improv Course
We’ll look at the different methods for progressing a scene, like diving deeper into relationships and making use of your environment. You’ll take part in exercises that will help you flesh out scenes and negotiate your way out of ‘getting stuck’. Overall, we’ll be working towards telling great stories while retaining your sense of freedom and spontaneity.
The aim of the course is to make you more confident in making your way through a scene by making purposeful choices and using the tools available to you.
Character Work
Scenes are very much made up by the characters that inhabit them; the character you play is the filter for the things you say and do on stage during scenes. So this course will devote some time to character work: improving authenticity, broadening range, and exploring relationships.
No Showcase
There will be no showcase at the end of this course. The nature of the course—high quality individual scenes—would mean having to teach a specific format of improv performance to make a showcase work. We decided it was more important to focus that time on the main topic of the course than to teach and rehearse an additional format purely for the sake of the showcase.
